But what makes Spencer Quinn’s series special is that his eleven books (so far) are, in fact, narrated by a canine—Chet the Jet, an oversized police-academy reject partnered with Bernie Little, a rough-and-tumble private investigator. They make a memorable team.The plot of “Tender Is the Bite” might seem as complicated to readers as it is to Chet, who sees and smells the world as only a dog can. But his irrepressible nature and not infrequent confusion pull us through all the disappearances, deaths, abductions, and Ukrainian interventions that make the tale intriguing. Fans of the series will appreciate that Chet, an attentive critic of human nature, grows more clever with each book. There are even places in this novel where I think Chet slips out of his doggie idiom and almost sounds like a conventional narrator. But have no fear, he’s quickly back on the job.
